A new online cannabis clinic for chronic pain management has launched through primary healthcare provider, The GP Service.
Cannabis company, Kanabo Group, announced the launch of its first online clinic, Treat It, on Monday 13 March, which will offer a range of treatments for chronic pain, including cannabis-based medicines.
The clinic will specialise in pain management, a problem facing millions of patients in the UK, many who have found conventional pharmaceuticals unsuccessful or to have debilitating side-effects and are facing long NHS waiting lists for treatment.
Treat It, which is regulated by the Care Quality Commission, is powered by The GP Service, an online private primary healthcare provider which was acquired by Kanabo Group in 2022.
Through its health tech platform the doctor can access a patient’s medical records and, if appropriate, make a recommendation for treatment with cannabis, which will then be prescribed by a specialist consultant.
UK law states that a prescription for cannabis can only be initiated by a consultant on the General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register.
Figures show approximately eight million people in the UK are living with chronic pain, including conditions such as migraine, sciatica, multiple sclerosis, neuropathic, back, neck and cancer pain.
According to recent data, 24% of these patients are currently being prescribed opioids suggesting that up to three million could potentially benefit from medicinal cannabis.
Suleman Sacranie, the founder of the GP service, said: “Millions with chronic pain are suffering in the UK needlessly because they can’t get timely access to medication, or are receiving treatment that doesn’t work or even causes unmanageable side effects.
“Our secure patient medical record system is optimised for patient outcomes so that a Treat It doctor will consult with a patient within 24 hours and, where appropriate, prescribe medicinal cannabis with delivery possible in a few days.”
Avihu Tamir, Kanabo Group, CEO, added: “We recognise the need for alternative treatments to conventional pharmaceuticals, which often leave chronic pain sufferers frustrated and underserved. With Treat It, we are putting the power back into the hands of patients, by offering secure and easy access to medical cannabis treatments, and delivering them right to the doorstep.”
