A one-off event next year will give GPs the opportunity to learn more about the prescribing of medical cannabis in the UK.

The UK charity for drug reform, Drug Science will hold a one-off mini conference that gives GPs everything they need to know about medical cannabis, on 13 January, 2022.

Held at Mackrell Solicitors in central London, the conference will provide a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of current UK legislation, how prescribing works in countries such as Australia and Canada, and how to get involved in UK medical cannabis prescribing at this current time.

Speakers include leading experts in GP prescribing, including Dr Dani Gordon and Dr Leon Barron, as well as a prescriber panel with audience Q&A.

Since UK legislation on medical cannabis was changed in November 2018, pressure has been mounting on the government to increase access for eligible patients.

Lack of access

In just over three years, only a handful of patients have been able to access the medicine through the NHS, with the vast majority forced to go through the private system for conditions such as chronic pain, including Ehlers Danlos syndrome, fibromyalgia, anxiety, insomnia and childhood epilepsy.

The event will feature the first public discussion of findings from a survey of over 1000 GPs, about their own attitudes and experiences of the barriers which patients face – which show that more than two thirds are regularly asked about medical cannabis as a possible treatment

Conducted by the Primary Care Cannabis Network (PCCN) in 2021, this presentation will be followed by a Q&A with GP and founder of the PCCN, Dr Barron, together with other prescribers.

Dr Barron commented: “Medical cannabis is still a contentious and evolving part of UK prescribing. But with so much still to change, it’s crucial GPs have what they need, and are prepared for an inevitable change in legislation.”

The conference, Medical Cannabis Prescribing for GPs, is the result of a collaboration between Drug Science and its partners: the PCCN, UK Medical Cannabis Clinicians’ Society,  the Cannabis Industry Council and Mackrell.Solicitors.

It will take place at Mackrell.Solicitors, Savoy Hill House in London, from 6.30pm – 9.30pm on 13 January, 2022.

For those unable to attend in-person, the evening will be live-streamed online with tickets available to all.

Tickets: £25 for in-person (UK-registered GPs only), £10 for online live-stream (everyone welcome).
