Sleep scientists from the Scripps Sleep Centre in San Diego, California, have published a study that found 15mg of CBD a day helps people with reported sleep issues get a full night’s rest.
The research team looked at a sizable cohort of 1800 individuals with the goal of evaluating the effectiveness of CBD and CBD combined with minor cannabinoids as a sleep aid in comparison to complementary therapies like melatonin.
In the double-blind, randomised, controlled study participants were selected to receive one of 6 treatments over a 4 week trial period. All 6 treatments were delivered to the participants in identical non-descript capsules to ensure they did not know which treatment they were receiving.
The capsules contained either 15mg of CBD alone, 5mg of melatonin alone, or contained CBD or melatonin in combination with other minor cannabinoids.
Reports from the participants about their quality of sleep were collected via weekly online surveys, conducted over 5 weeks (baseline plus the 4-week trial). Researchers assessed the quality of sleep by using a standardised sleep test known as Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS)
The results show sleep improvement in 56% to 75% of participants across all treatments, as well as the treatments being deemed safe with only 12% of participants reporting minor side effects, and no reported severe side effects.
However, researchers found no noticeable differences in effect between the 6 treatments, “There were no significant differences in effect, however, between 15 mg CBD isolate and formulations containing 15 mg CBD and 15 mg cannabinol (CBN), alone or in combination with 5 mg cannabichromene (CBC). There were also no significant differences in effect between 15 mg CBD isolate and formulations containing 5 mg melatonin, alone or in combination with 15 mg CBD and 15 mg CBN.”
The authors of the study concluded that CBD is safe and effective at aiding sleep, although it does not exceed the efficacy of melatonin. “Our findings suggest that chronic use of a low dose of CBD is safe and could improve sleep quality, though these effects do not exceed that of 5 mg melatonin. Moreover, the addition of low doses of CBN and CBC may not improve the effect of formulations containing CBD or melatonin isolate.”
